Cap-end and rod-end heads, flange and threaded caps with the bore, thread, seal groove and port features machined to the assembly drawing.
The closed end carries the pressure
The head or cap that closes the barrel is a pressure part. Its bore must stay concentric to the barrel bore, its thread or flange must carry the full end load, and any seal groove has to match the seal maker’s published housing dimensions.
Tell us whether the cylinder is welded or tie-rod, and whether the head is the rod-end or cap-end type. The two are machined differently and the datum features are not interchangeable.

Single set-up. We machine the bore, the seal groove and the locating diameter in one set-up so the concentricity between them is held by the machine rather than by assembly. State which feature is the datum if the drawing is explicit.
What we need on the drawing
- Head type: cap-end or rod-end, welded or tie-rod
- Bore diameter and tolerance, and the datum it is measured from
- Thread form, class and sealing feature for threaded heads
- Flange dimensions and bolt circle if flanged
- Seal groove dimensions with corner radii, or the seal series
- Material grade and any NDT acceptance criteria
